Cultus Lake Waterpark has announced that it will be temporarily closed following a scary incident that sent a dozen children to the hospital.

B.C.’s largest water park posted the announcement on Monday, June 15, just hours after reports of multiple people suffering injuries at the Fraser Valley water park shortly after 11 a.m.

“A serious incident occurred near one of our rides at Cultus Lake Waterpark, in the queuing area,” said the social media post. “We are deeply saddened by the incident which occurred today, resulting in injuries to a number of guests visiting the park, including children.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims injured and families affected by this unfortunate event. We would like to thank the Cultus Lake Fire Department and paramedics for their support and care today.”

Cultus Lake Waterpark added that it will be closing for the next 48 hours to facilitate a thorough and independent investigation.

“We are fully cooperating with the authorities through the process of investigation and assessment. We are determined to ensure that something like this does not happen within our facility again.”

Chilliwack RCMP released a statement confirming that there is no ongoing risk to the public following the incident.

“Our priority from the outset has been the safety and well-being of those involved. This appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing risk to the public,” said Cpl. Carmen Kiener of the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP.

“First responders acted quickly to secure the area, provide care, and ensure all individuals received the medical attention they required. We are grateful for the various agencies that attended this incident to assist all of those affected.”

Chilliwack RCMP added that at this time, there is no indication that the event was caused by a person. Investigators also do not believe it to be caused by deliberate human action.

Cultus Lake Waterpark, located at 4150 Columbia Valley Highway, was open to school groups on Monday when the incident occurred.

BC Emergency Health Services told Daily Hive that two of the injured were transported to the hospital by air ambulance, and the other 10 were transported by ground ambulance.

Online discussion points to the injuries being caused by an electric shock to the injured youth.

Kyle Donaldson with BC Hydro confirmed that there was an electrical issue, but after an initial investigation, crews have identified that it originated on the customer’s side of the electrical service, rather than within BC Hydro’s infrastructure or equipment.

“The safety of the public is our top priority, and we’re continuing to work cooperatively with the water park operator and will support the ongoing investigation in any way we can,” said Donaldson.

According to Ken Hoff, assistant director of communications and community relations for the Coquitlam School District, a number of students from School District 43’s Minnekhada Middle School in Port Coquitlam visited Cultus Lake Waterpark today.

“Eleven students are being assessed for unspecified injuries, and all are in stable condition. We have no information on the nature of the injuries or the cause at this time, as this is currently being investigated by the RCMP,” shared Hoff in a statement.

Minnekhada Middle School teaches students in grades 6 to 8.

Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West released a statement on social media stating that the City of Port Coquitlam is ready to support families affected by the incident.

“As a dad, my heart goes out to the students and families affected. There are few things more frightening than receiving a call that your child has been hurt while away from you on a school trip,” posted West.

WorkSafe BC has taken charge of the investigation and has issued a stop-work order until it is safe for work activities at Cultus Lake Waterpark to resume.

“WorkSafeBC is working closely with Technical Safety BC and the employer to gather more information and determine next steps,” said the independent provincial agency.
