Vancouver Police are investigating after a collision in East Vancouver sent seven people to hospital with various injuries early on Friday morning.

In a release, police said the crash took place just before 6 am on Grandview Highway near Penticton Street.

“It appears a grey Ford Focus and a black Mercedes SUV collided head-on just over the centre line of the four-lane highway,” said VPD Const. Jason Doucette.

Three occupants of the Ford, and four from the Mercedes, were taken to hospital with a variety of injuries.

The 20-year-old male driver of Ford, and his 19-year-old female passenger, have life-threatening injuries, said Doucette. “The third occupant has serious, but what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.” All three occupants are Burnaby residents.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 54-year-old man from Richmond, suffered relatively minor injuries, as did the three passengers in his vehicle, ages 48, 59, and 70.

Officers from the VPD’s Collision Investigation Unit have closed Grandview Highway between Nanaimo and Penticton Streets, while they conduct their investigation into what may have led to the collision.

The road is expected to re-open around 4 pm this afternoon.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact investigators at 604-717-3012.
