BC health officials announce 148 new coronavirus cases

British Columbia health officials announced 148 new test-positive coronavirus cases on Thursday, bringing the total number of recorded cases in the province to 8,543.

During a press conference, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said that broken down by health region, this equates to 3,094 cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 4,361 in the Fraser Health region, 203 in the Island Health region, 520 in the Interior Health region, 278 in the Northern Health region and 87 cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There were also two deaths in the past day, bringing the total number of virus-related fatalities in BC to 229.

There are 1,371 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, and 3,417 people are under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases.

Currently, 61 individuals are hospitalized with COVID-19, 20 of whom are in intensive care. The remaining people with COVID-19 are recovering at home in self-isolation.

As well, 6,917 individuals who tested positive have now recovered.

Health Minister Adrian Dix is not taking part in the daily briefings for the duration of the election campaign.
