Coquitlam RCMP are sharing some details about an alleged hit-and-run in which the driver apparently checked on the victim before driving away.
According to a media release from the Coquitlam RCMP, the incident occurred on March 3, just after 1 p.m, at Atlantic Avenue and The High Street in Coquitlam.
The driver was driving a red SUV.
“While enroute, officers were advised the driver who initially stopped had since driven away in a Red SUV with an unknown licence plate. Officers conducted patrols for the vehicle, but it was not located,” Coquitlam RCMP shared in a release.
Witness reports suggest that the pedestrian was crossing the street at the crosswalk in a mixed commercial residential area of Coquitlam when she was struck by the driver.
“The witnesses advised the driver initially stopped and got out of her vehicle and allegedly told the witness she was going to move her SUV, but upon returning to it, she drove away,” Coquitlam RCMP said.
The victim was transported to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The driver involved in this incident knows they struck this pedestrian. In addition to seeking witnesses or dash cam footage, we are asking this driver to do the right thing and contact police,” said Sgt. Adriana O’Malley, Coquitlam RCMP media relations officer, in a statement.
RCMP is now looking for witnesses and folks who might have dash-cam footage of the incident.
The driver is described as a female between 30 and 40 years of age, chubby and potentially Middle Eastern. RCMP said she was wearing some form of cultural headdress at the time.
“Anyone who was in the area of Atlantic Avenue and The High Street in Coquitlam between 1 p.m. and 1:10 p.m. and may have witnessed or have dash cam of this incident is asked to contact Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2026-5372,” RCMP added.
