Overnight Granville Bridge construction could lead to Vancouver traffic delays for a month

Rehabilitation work on the Granville Street Bridge south ramps continues in Vancouver, and drivers have been warned that traffic-pattern changes may impact overnight commutes starting this weekend.

According to the City of Vancouver, construction on the decks of the four ramps used to enter and exit the bridge on the south side, as well as on the piers supporting the ramps from below, is ongoing until this summer.

Overnight work on the south ramp begins on Sunday, March 8, with nightly lane closures in place between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday until early April.

“If you’re travelling in the project area, plan ahead and expect delays,” added the City of Vancouver online. “If travelling across the bridge, expect ramp closures and reduced speed limits. Ramp closures will be phased to minimize traffic impacts.

“If travelling on or near Anderson Street (below the bridge ramps), expect occasional road closures, detours, and parking restrictions.”

Signboards near the Granville Street Bridge also warned commuters to expect delays.

The City added that the structural rehab work includes concrete repairs, deck joint repairs, and bearing replacement.

“This planned maintenance work supports this infrastructure’s ability to continue providing a safe and reliable transportation route for all users.”

It’s been a busy few years of construction on the Granville Street Bridge, with separated pathways for pedestrians and cyclists across the deck opening last summer.

Called the “Granville Connector,” two vehicle lanes on the west side of the bridge were converted into a continuous, two-way separated active transportation route between the northernmost end of the Arbutus Greenway at the intersection of Fir Street and West 5th Avenue and downtown Vancouver.

Drivers were also alerted by the City of Vancouver that a temporary Burrard Bridge closure will impact all traffic this weekend due to the removal of a large crane from the Seńáḵw development next to the bridge.
