Closed and closing soon: Vancouver restaurants to say goodbye to

The restaurant industry in Vancouver can be fickle and – once again – the city’s dining scene has suffered some casualties. Alas, this is the way of the foodie world.

Here is your update on restaurants in and around Vancouver that have recently shuttered or will do so imminently.

Merchants Workshop


After a successful opening of Vancouver’s first ever Nashville Hot Chicken eatery, Downlow Chicken Shack, the owners closed the doors to their other restaurant nearby, Merchant’s Workshop, on August 16.

Jethro’s Fine Grub – Dunbar

The 3420 Dunbar Street location of Jethro’s Fine Grub closed its doors on July 26. Employees of the popular Vancouver breakfast spot confirmed the news for Daily Hive but reiterated that the remaining 3455 Fraser Street location would be continuing to operate and serve up those epic breakfast, brunch, and lunch creations.

Roots + Fruits

Roots + Fruits, a beloved plant-based cafe located at 848 Powell Street, has announced it will be closing its doors on August 17. The team at Roots + Fruit cite an “extreme rental increase” as the reason for the closure. They also let patrons know they will be actively searching for a new location.

This 4194 Fraser Street coffee spot and eatery has been sold and “the new operator lives in the neighbourhood and runs restaurants we very much respect and admire”. The last day of service will be Sunday, August 19.
