A Chilliwack grandmother who won $500,000 in the lottery says she’s waiting to spend her prize on a trip to Europe once COVID-19 travel restrictions ease.

Mary Hnatiw had all four numbers match for May 1’s Lotto Max draw. She said she was “in shock” when she found out she won while filling up her vehicle at a local gas station.

“[My daughter] was so surprised, she said ‘I can’t believe it,'” Hnatiw said.

These days Hnatiw spends her time sewing and cooking at home. But she’s already dreaming of the trip to Europe she can plan with her winnings.

“I would like to go back to Europe…but right now that is not an option. I will celebrate at home and share the rest with my kids and grandkids.”

She picked up her prize remotely using the BCLC’s alternate prize claim process during the pandemic.
