Charges have been laid after an assault at a Surrey townhouse that killed a woman and sent a toddler and man to the hospital.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, just before 9 pm. The Surrey RCMP were called after a stabbing inside a residence on the 12700 block of 66 Avenue. Police officers found a woman suffering from critical injuries. An adult man and a two-year-old child had serious injuries as well.

The two adult victims have since been identified as Baljit Kaur and Jagjit Singh. All three of the injured victims were rushed to the hospital but, unfortunately, Kaur passed away after arrival.

The suspect, Harpreet Singh, reportedly fled the scene but was later located and arrested by police. Harpreet Singh has since been charged with second-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

Sergeant Frank Jang, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), says that the incident began from a “verbal altercation.”

“This began as a verbal altercation involving family members that ultimately ended with the tragic loss of a life,” Jang says in an emailed statement.

“Incidents such as these when children are involved are especially emotionally difficult and we will continue to provide support to those affected by this tragedy.”

Harpreet Singh will make his next court appearance on October 29, 2020.
