How to protect yourself from catalytic converter theft in Metro Vancouver

Sep 7 2025, 4:00 pm

A Metro Vancouver police department is warning the public of a “noticeable increase” in catalytic converter theft in the community, and has offered guidance on how to protect yourself from it.

The alert from the Langley RCMP comes after a rise in theft of the critical vehicle component.

According to authorities, catalytic converters are targeted for the precious metals they contain, and replacing a stolen one can be pricey and time-consuming.

“Thieves often target vehicles parked in driveways, unsecured lots, and on quiet streets, usually during the night or early morning hours,” said Sergeant Zynal Sharoom of the Langley RCMP.

“Larger vehicles such as SUVs, pickup trucks, and vans are especially vulnerable due to their higher ground clearance.”

Langley RCMP also issued advice on what owners can do to protect themselves and their vehicles, including:

  • Park in secure, well-lit areas whenever possible.
  • Consider a catalytic converter anti-theft device, such as a protective shield or cage.
  • Engrave or mark your catalytic converter with your vehicle identification number. The VIN can help police track stolen parts.
  • Set your car alarm to detect vibration or movement.
  • Be alert for suspicious sounds, such as grinding or sawing, especially during late-night hours.

Members of the public are urged to keep safe by not confronting thieves if they witness a crime in progress. Instead, they are asked to call 911 immediately for in-progress crimes or emergencies, or the non-emergency line.

“The Langley RCMP is actively investigating these thefts and increasing patrols in targeted areas. Your vigilance and timely reporting can make a significant difference in preventing crime and keeping our community safe.”

A video that Daily Hive received in 2022 showing a catalytic converter theft in a Vancouver neighbourhood highlights just how quick and easy the process is.

The submitted video shows a van pulling up in the middle of a residential neighbourhood before someone pops out of the trunk. The person who jumps out pulls out some sort of long cable from the back of the van before he disappears out of view.

The van then speeds off, at which point you can see the cable hooking the underside of one of the cars parked on the street, before pulling out the converter and disappearing out of view.

Daily Hive also previously reported about a man who was crushed to death while allegedly trying to steal a catalytic converter.
