A huge FREE street festival is coming to Surrey next month

With gas prices remaining volatile in Metro Vancouver, local drivers are looking for reasons to leave their vehicles at home, even for a day. An event happening in Surrey next month is encouraging them to do so while also having fun.

The fourth-annual Car Free Day Surrey, hosted by the Newton Business Improvement Association, is happening on Saturday, June 7, along 137th Street.

The day-long event will feature live entertainment, family-friendly activities, food vendors, and more.

“Car Free Day shines a spotlight on how essential better transit options are for communities like Newton,” said Philip Aguirre, executive director of the Newton BIA, in a release. “We’re excited to welcome people to experience our neighbourhood on foot, but the bigger picture is clear – we need faster, more reliable rapid transit to truly support a thriving, accessible, and sustainable Newton.

“The rapid bus network is a step in the right direction, helping connect people to our business district without relying on cars. Events like this not only highlight the need for better infrastructure — they bring our community together, support local businesses, and show what’s possible when we prioritize people, connection, and livable streets.”

Visitors will find lots to see and do during the free street party, including the new acoustic stage with soulful performances by Glisha, high-energy folk by Pat Chessell, and more. You can also stop by the DJ and Dance Stage for dance battles and live sets by DJ Seko, Street Kings Dance, Charlie PS, Good Goin’, and DJ A-Slam.

Bring the young ones to check out the expanded Family Zone, which features a free climbing wall, bounce house, roving characters, face painting, and interactive performances for all ages.

Of course, a street party wouldn’t be complete without delicious food, and guests can look forward to treats like burgers, mini donuts, kettle corn, and spiral potatoes from a variety of local vendors.
