Scenic Burnaby run for men's mental health honours "person who gave everything"

May 8 2025, 9:06 pm

Runners will be lacing up their sneakers at Burnaby Lake next month to break the silence around men’s mental health while also honouring one of their own.

Mikey’s Run, on Sunday, June 29, is a fundraiser for HeadsUpGuys, a free online mental health support platform. Registration is open now, and participants will receive several great perks.

HeadsUpGuys supports men and helps them fight depression by providing tips, tools, information about professional services, and stories of success. It has been visited by more than five million people from around the globe since it launched in 2015.

According to Evan Moore, one of Mikey’s Run organizers and the owner of Fit First Footwear in Burnaby, the event aims to bring attention to the startling statistics related to male suicide rates in Canada.

“Our charity partner, HeadsUpGuys, is an incredible resource that provides valuable assets to help those impacted by mental health,” Moore told Daily Hive. “It is also a great resource for the family and friends of those suffering and provides ways we can all be there for our loved ones.”

“If you or someone you know is suffering, take action and seek help. The help is here, and there is nothing to be ashamed of. Let’s break the silence, one step at a time.”

According to HeadsUpGuys, men account for 75 to 80 per cent of deaths by suicide and mental health struggles in men often go undiagnosed or unrecognized.

Mikey’s Run is also in honour of a “great friend” and a “passionate runner who poured his energy into everything he did.”

“Mike was a smart, driven and caring person who gave everything to his family and friends,” Moore added. “His story is a powerful reminder that mental health matters and that it’s okay to talk about what we’re going through.”

Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to Mikey’s Run at Burnaby Lake. Participants can choose between an 800 m fun run, a 5 km walk, or a 10 km run. They will also receive a branded Asics technical t-shirt, a custom race medal, a race bib, and chip-timed results.

The full 10 km route winds through the lake’s scenic trails, with water stations, course marshals, and signage ensuring that runners don’t get lost. Post-run refreshments and a special swag surprise will also be provided for participants.

The race will raise funds for HeadsUpGuys and also create a space for participants and their families to feel safe, access resources and remove stigmas around mental health. Registration is open now, though don’t delay because the event is coming up fast.

“This run is more than a tribute to Mike’s love of running; it’s a call to action,” the Mikey’s Run website explained. “Let’s honour his legacy by creating space for openness, connection, and support. Together, we can help others feel safe to share their struggles and find the strength to reach out.”
