Canucks will wear their popular 1990s Flying Skate jersey this weekend

The Vancouver Canucks will be kicking it old school on Saturday night, as the black Flying Skate jersey makes its glorious return to Rogers Arena.

The Canucks will wear these popular 1990s uniforms on just three occasions this season for their 50th anniversary. The team will also rock these beauties on January 4 against the New York Rangers for 90s Night, and on February 10 against the Nashville Predators for Legends Night as part of Sedin Week.

Fans were given three jersey options to choose from in the summer of 2018, with 70% of the 23,613 votes cast picking the Flying Skate over the Flying V and Original Orca jerseys.

Born in 1994, Troy Stecher was just three years old when the Canucks switched from the Skate to the Orca, but the Richmond native is excited about the retro look nonetheless.

“I think they’re so clean looking. I’m a big fan,” said Stecher. “I’m excited to wear them.”

So excited, in fact, that Stecher got some custom-made Nike shoes for the occasion.

“I think they look sweet,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of compliments today.”

The Canucks will surely be getting a lot of compliments for their fashion choice on Saturday.

Jacob Markstrom and Thatcher Demko have retro goalie gear ready for the occasion, which we got our first look at during a practice last month. Players were in retro practice gear on Friday in preparation for the game.

The Canucks switched to the Orca in 1997, but they have brought back the Flying Skate before, doing so on February 13, 2016, against the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 20th anniversary of Rogers Arena. These jerseys will be subtly different though, as the NHL switched to Adidas as their official uniform supplier in 2017.
