Ex-Vancouver Canucks defenceman Soucy already healthy-scratched by Rangers

Things haven’t exactly gone to plan for ex-Vancouver Canucks defenceman Carson Soucy with the New York Rangers.

Just over a week after being traded to the Big Apple for a third-round pick, Soucy has already found himself back in the press box. After playing in his first four games with the Rangers, he was a healthy scratch for Saturday night’s 4-0 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

It was the third time this season that he was healthy-scratched including two times with the Canucks earlier this year.

Things did start a lot better for Soucy in his first game after the trade as he scored in his Rangers debut and played over 15 minutes. However, that ice time has fallen to around the 13-minute mark and with Adam Fox returning to the lineup, Soucy appears to be the odd-man out.

That trade is starting to look like a tidy bit of business for the Canucks as Soucy was already clearly on the outs in the organization. The trade cleared up some cap space for the team and allowed them to give some of the team’s young defenders like Elias Pettersson and Victor Mancini a chance to crack into the NHL.

Soucy is also far from the only trade deadline dud for the Rangers this season. Both Jusso Pärssinen and Calvin de Haan were healthy scratches alongside Soucy during last night’s game. New York can still hang their head high with J.T. Miller, however, as he has managed more than a point-per-game pace with the team since being acquired from Vancouver in January.

Barring another trade or transaction, the Rangers will be on the hook for Soucy’s $3.25 million cap hit until the end of next season.
