An anti-mask rally in downtown Vancouver this weekend will include a rendition of “O Canada” sung by Mark Donnelly, who is best known for singing the national anthem at Canucks games.

On Saturday, December 5, the BC Christmas Freedom Rally 2020 is scheduled to take place in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery. The event’s page says that the protest will take place from 12 to 4 pm, with a march with Santa scheduled at 1 pm.

Event organizers say that the rally will be similar to previous events “except [with] more emphasis on being joyous, jovial, and festive.”

Donnelly has been confirmed on the schedule of events.

When reached for comment, Canucks COO Trent Carroll told Daily Hive Donnelly is “acting independently and we hope the public understands he is not representing the Vancouver Canucks.”

Carroll furthered that “we encourage everyone to wear a mask and to follow the provincial health orders. They are in place to help everyone in BC to stop COVID-19 from spreading in our province.”

As of British Columbia’s latest COVID-19 health orders, all events are suspended in an effort to reduce transmission and keep schools and workplaces open.

The order includes gatherings at hotels, bars, and movie theatres, as well as demonstrations and rallies of any kind.

A spokesperson for the VPD told Daily Hive that they’re “aware” of Saturday’s event, and “will have officers on site that day to respond if anything should arise.”
