It wasn’t long ago that picking Vancouver Canucks poster boys was a simple task.
Quinn Hughes, J.T. Miller, Elias Pettersson, Thatcher Demko, and Brock Boeser. Easy peasy.
Those were the players on banners outside of Rogers Arena and on promotional material.
Here’s an example of a Canucks ticket ad from last summer:

But now? It’s a lot less straightforward.
Hughes and Miller are gone, of course, and the shine is off the other stars.
Pettersson led the Canucks in scoring last season, but he’s no longer the fan favourite he used to be. The past two years have been rough for Boeser and Demko, too.
The Canucks have been pushing “game packs” since the schedule dropped earlier this month. It’s a separate process from season-ticket renewals, as existing members will select their seats before new game-pack buyers.

The above image is the most commonly used marketing material we have spotted. Boeser is front-and-centre, flanked by Pettersson and Filip Hronek. The other two players in the picture are Linus Karlsson and Drew O’Connor.
Interesting that Jake DeBrusk is nowhere to be found, given that he led all Canucks in goals last season. His name has been mentioned in numerous trade rumours since the season ended, so that’s understandable.
Hronek, Pettersson, and Boeser also led the way when the Canucks schedule was revealed, but with Vancouver’s most promising young players: Liam Öhgren, Zeev Buium, and Tom Willander.
It’s been quite some time since the Canucks have had to season a full-scale rebuild. The Canucks traded popular players like Trevor Linden and Kirk McLean in 1998, while Pavel Bure held out for a trade. Without star players that fans were genuinely excited about, “new grit” was the team’s slogan heading into the 1998-99 season.

It’ll be interesting to see what Canucks marketing material looks like two years from now. We could see Buium lead the way by that time. Maybe Caleb Malhotra and Braeden Cootes will have arrived by then as well.
Until then, we may be witnessing this generation’s version of “new grit.”
