It’s looking very unlikely that tonight’s Vancouver Canucks game will be played as scheduled.

Multiple reports indicate that NHL players are being told to prepare for games to be postponed tonight, including from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Irfaan Gaffar, and TVA’s Renaud Lavoie.

There are two games on the schedule: Game 3 of the Canucks vs Golden Knights series in Edmonton (6:45 pm PT), and Game 3 between the Flyers and Islanders in Toronto (4 pm PT).

The Canucks and Golden Knights each had media availabilities scheduled for this morning, but both were postponed.

The NHL was criticized heavily for not following the lead of NBA players, who boycotted all games yesterday in protest of the recent police shooting of Jacob Blake, an unarmed Black man in Wisconsin.

“I’m disappointed that we’re talking about hockey tonight,” Kelly Hrudey said on last night’s Hockey Night in Canada broadcast. “I don’t think we should be here. I think the NHL should postpone the games.”

“It’s incredibly insulting as a Black man in hockey the lack of action and acknowledgement from the NHL, just straight up insulting,” Evander Kane said Wednesday evening.

Today the Hockey Diversity Alliance, which is backed by Kane and other NHL players, has made a formal request to the league to suspend both of tonight’s playoff games.
