If you told Roberto Luongo back in 2011 that he’d one day win two Stanley Cups, the former Vancouver Canucks goalie might’ve been the happiest man on the planet.
But while he’s now a two-time champion, Luongo’s path to success ended up taking a few twists and turns to get to that result.
In 2011, Luongo’s Canucks famously fell 4-0 to the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final on home ice, with Brad Marchand’s three points for the visitors one of the key reasons Vancouver ultimately saw their playoff run end in heartbreak.
Some 14 years later, with the 37-year-old Marchand now a Florida Panther after a high-profile trade deadline move and the 46-year-old Luongo a special advisor to general manager Bill Zito, the two former foes are both celebrating their second Stanley Cups together after a 5-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6 on Tuesday night.

After Marchand’s goal in the second game of this year’s Stanley Cup Final series to give the Panthers a double overtime victory, Luongo tweeted out that his former rival was his “favorite player of all timeā, and later tweeted a picture of the two of them together celebrating the Stanley Cup win.

When asked by Sportsnet’s Gene Principe about how Canucks fans might think of the unlikely partnership, Luongo showed some love to his former home city.
“I love Vancouver too… Brad, we had our battles. That was 15 years ago; we have to be able to move on. He’s a great player and an even better teammate. We’re just happy to have him on our team, we saw what he did on this run… he was a huge add to our team,” Luongo replied.
Luongo was also interviewed on NHL Network by his former tandem mate Cory Schneider.

With Marchand now slated to be a free agent this summer, who knows how long he and Luongo will actually get to spend in the same organization. But if last year’s Panthers celebrations were any indication, perhaps the two old rivals will have quite a few good parties to hit up this offseason.
