Canadian Olympian Evan Dunfee walked Vancouver Sun Run almost as fast as Sedins ran it

If you were one of the 39,384 people who competed in the Vancouver Sun Run last weekend, chances are you were beaten by a man who walked it.

There’s no shame in that though, because we’re not talking about just any man. We’re talking about Richmond’s Evan Dunfee, one of the fastest race-walkers in the world.

Dunfee has represented Canada at three Olympic Games, including Tokyo 2020, where he won a bronze medal. So the 10 km Vancouver Sun Run must have been like a walk in the park for the 34-year-old, who recently set a world record.

Dunfee’s blistering time of 38:17 was only about a minute slower than Henrik Sedin and about two minutes behind Daniel Sedin, which is impressive because of course the Vancouver Canucks legends were running, not walking.

In a video shared to social media, you can hear the disbelief of some spectators near the finish line.

“Wait, has he been walking this whole time?” someone asked as they saw Dunfee wiggling his hips down Pacific Boulevard.

“Yeah,” another replied.

“Wait, actually?”

“Yeah.”

That’s when someone else chimed in.

“Wait, wait, what?”

“Yeah Evan’s walking it.”

Dunfee placed 356th out of 39,384 racers, which put him in the top one per cent of finishers.

“I had such a blast taking on the runners and race walking the Vancouver Sun Run,” Dunfee said on Instagram. “I even managed to finish in the top one per cent. You know I love this community so much and the best part is hearing people’s reactions out on course.”
