Suspect wanted on Canada-wide warrant arrested after 5-hour standoff

A suspect wanted on a Canada-wide warrant is now in custody after being arrested in Burnaby on Thursday night.

According to police, the incident began at approximately 6:30 pm, when officers responded to what they described as a “domestic incident” in the 7000-block of Canada Way.

Police said the upon their arrival, the woman was “secured safe” while the suspect barricaded himself in the house, beginning what would turn out to be a five-hour standoff between him and police.

The Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team and members of the Crisis Negotiator Team were called to assist Burnaby RCMP in the incident, and the immediate surrounding area was evacuated as a safety precaution.

At 11:30 pm, the suspect, a 20-year-old Burnaby resident, was arrested without incident and taken into custody where police said he remains until his court appearance, which is scheduled for later today.
