Police are investigating after human remains were found on Burnaby Mountain over the weekend.

According to Burnaby RCMP, the investigation began around 6:30 pm on July 16, when officers responded to a report from a 15-year-old boy and his mother, “who believed they had discovered human remains in a forested area near Forest Grove Park.”

Police said the pair told officers that they had been building a fort when they unearthed the remains.

Burnaby RCMP frontline members responded with the assistance of the Integrated Forensic Identification Services and “have since confirmed the discovery as skeletal human remains.”

Burnaby RCMP Serious Crimes Unit continues to investigate this incident and “do not believe there is a risk to public safety.”

The identity of the remains is unknown at this time.
