Fortius Sport & Health, one of the largest athletic development centres in the Lower Mainland, has announced that it will permanently close its doors at the end of the year.

The not-for-profit operates a 148,000-sq-ft facility in Burnaby. After announcing a tentative closure earlier this month, the centre has since confirmed that it “will be closing all business operations” as of December 31, 2020.

Fortius adds that the closure was caused by the many difficulties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic put tremendous pressure on our business as it has many businesses,” Fortius says on its website. “The challenges of the pandemic made continuing to operate Fortius no longer a possibility.”

At this point in time, it’s undetermined what will happen to the physical facility as well as the future of the Fortius Foundation. Some of the smaller businesses that operate inside the centre, such as Starbucks and FitFirst Footwear, will remain open at this time.

New appointments and bookings can still be scheduled up until December 31, 2020, and any memberships will be pro-rated as necessary.

“We cannot express how grateful we are for your loyalty and support over the last seven years,” Fortius says. “It was our pleasure and privilege to help so many of you optimize your health, fitness and sports performance.”
