Please note: As recommended by BC’s provincial health officials, gatherings of any kind and unessential travel in the province is not recommended at this time. Please adhere to COVID-19 health and safety measures, including proper physical distancing and frequent hand washing, and wearing a mask or face-covering in public indoor and retail spaces. If you are sick, please stay home.

There will be a major projection mapping installation in downtown Vancouver to lift the mood of the cityscape over seven consecutive nights, starting on Saturday, March 6, 2021.

Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association (DVBIA) announced today it is staging BRIGHT Downtown, which will illuminate the eastern facade of the historic Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. The light show will feature 3D animations that play with the hotel’s architectural elements, using the building’s structural outline as the foundation for bold and bright optical illusions.

The theme is “Tangled,” which will explore “how art is intrinsically interwoven into every step of the human experience,” using joyful imagery and soundscapes.

The free outdoor light installation can be seen from “ĹĄxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7ĂŠnk Square,” also known as the North Plaza of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The DVBIA intends to make this a new annual event in the city, but it depends on the success of this year’s inaugural installation.

“The DVBIA’s latest activation is an exciting and unique opportunity to view a light projection of this scale and duration in the heart of the downtown core,” said Charles Gauthier, the president and CEO of the DVBIA, in a statement.

“Safe, physically distanced events like these create a meaningful shared experience that is so essential for the community, now more than ever. It’s a reminder that although we cannot all be together right now, we’re not alone.”

The projection show, staged by local projection mapping company Go2 Productions, will run in 15-minute loops each night to encourage staggered viewing. The company is also responsible for the annual Facade Festival on the exterior of the Vancouver Art Gallery.

“Fairmont Hotel Vancouver takes great pride in being a prominent cultural and social destination within the heart of Downtown Vancouver,” said Adam Laker, General Manager at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

“Having this opportunity to collaborate with the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association on a program like BRIGHT Downtown means a great deal to myself and the Fairmont Family, and we are thrilled to be able to offer our support in creating this safe and enjoyable experience for our community.”
