Toronto Blue Jays rookie Trey Yesavage looked calm and composed in his MLB debut earlier this week, but his teammates wanted to test that further.
The 22-year-old Yesavage was lights out in his first-ever MLB start against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. He struck out nine batters, which is a franchise-record in an MLB debut performance, and gave up just one earned run in five innings en route to a Blue Jays victory.
It was as impressive a start to a major-league career as you could get. Yet, that doesn’t mean that he is any different from the other players in the Toronto dugout. Though he has been around for just two games as a Blue Jay, Yesavage seems to be getting along just fine with his new teammates.
As part of an initiation to the team, Yesavage was forced to go through the wringer while he was conducting a live interview on Sportsnet from the Blue Jays dugout on Tuesday night. First, it was Vladimir Guerrero Jr. throwing sunflower seeds at him while he tried to pay attention to the questions.
“Let me guess, is that Guerrero?” Blue Jays play-by-play man Dan Shulman asked as the young pitcher was being pelted with sunflower seeds.
“It sure is,” Yesavage replied, with a smile.

If that wasn’t enough, a pair of veteran Toronto pitchers also decided to get in on the fun. During that same interview, both Kevin Gausman and Chris Bassitt snuck up behind Yesavage and started putting everything they could get their hands on into the paper cup sitting in front of the rookie.
“You’re getting a lot of help with those veteran pitchers, huh?” Buck Martinez quipped.
It’s been quite the journey for the young Blue Jays pitcher as he has played in five different baseball leagues en route to his MLB debut. Coming into the big leagues was obviously a dream come true for Yesavage, but trying to gel with your new teammates can always be a challenge.
If these pranks are any indication, it’s a challenge that the newbie has easily overcome in his first week as a big leaguer.
