The hype surrounding Toronto Blue Jays top prospect Trey Yesavage appears to be very well warranted.
Yesavage made his MLB debut Monday night, and aside from some early struggles in the first inning, he was nothing short of spectacular.
The 22-year-old pitched 5+ innings, giving up just one run while striking out nine Tampa Bay Rays batters. It marked the most strikeouts ever by a Blue Jays pitcher in his MLB debut.

What made Yesavage’s debut even better was that he had several family members and friends who were able to make it to George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa to watch the historic night, one which had his dad in particular quite emotional.
Cameras caught Yesavage’s father wiping away tears in the stands.

Unfortunately for Yesavage, the Blue Jays were unable to put a single run on the board until the eighth inning, meaning he wasn’t able to pick up a deserved win in his debut. They were able to put up a run in the eighth, however, and the bullpen stood tall, paving the way for a 2-1 victory in a game that went to extras.
“It was as special as I thought,” Yesavage said afterward. “It was almost like there was some sort of trance put over me with a feeling of peace out there. I enjoyed every moment.”
Yesavage has quickly risen up the ranks this season, going from Single-A all the way to the bigs. Over that time, he’s gained plenty of attention for his ability to throw strikes, having racked up a ridiculous 160 strikeouts through a combined 98 innings prior to his Blue Jays call-up.
That same strikeout ability was on display last night, as indicated by his nine punch-outs, but was perhaps most noticeable in the fourth inning. The 6-foot-4 righty was actually robbed of an immaculate inning, but still managed to ring up all three batters he faced.

What happens going forward for Yesavage remains to be seen, as the Blue Jays now have just 12 games remaining on their schedule. Should he get another opportunity to start, it may come later this week versus the Kansas City Royals.
