A B.C. teen is facing the suspension of his licence, and police have shared wild video footage of a car crash that led to those consequences.
According to BC Highway Patrol (BCHP), the teen, from Abbotsford, has been found guilty of a long list of driving offences.
BC Highway Patrol has released the footage to highlight the risks of speeding and poor decisions on the road.
To make matters worse, it was the teen’s stepmom’s car.
A passenger in the backseat is recording the video. Then there’s the B.C. teen driver and another passenger in the front seat. There’s some commotion around the driver’s conduct, which causes someone to say, “Don’t kill us, brah.”
After some bad driving decisions, the teen driver ends up crashing into a truck, and the teens flee from the car, running away from the scene.
BCHP says the cell phone footage was voluntarily given to police, and that it shows “how the youth chose to put his friends and himself at risk instead of stopping and [facing] a simple speeding violation.”
“You can see how quickly the teen’s friends went from enjoying the ride to ‘don’t kill us,'” said BCHP Corporal Michael McLaughlin in a release.
The video stems from an incident in a BCHP file from last July, involving a BMW sedan recorded driving at speeds of 180 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
“We hope this video stimulates parents to talk with their children about how badly this could have ended,” McLaughlin said, adding, “We all need to do more to prevent tragic outcomes.”
Along with the Class 7 Learner suspension, the 16-year-old was found guilty of excessive speed, which comes with a fine of $483 and driving without due care and attention, which carries a $368 fine.
The driver also faces several fines for driving contrary to restrictions, including having too many passengers, not having a supervisor, and not displaying his “L” sign.
“The car was towed and impounded for seven days, and the driver’s stepmother was also left responsible for paying the associated costs as well as any collision deductible or repairs,” BCHP added.
