BC Lions to announce hiring of new head coach today: report

Dec 2 2019, 6:15 pm

It looks like the BC Lions have found their man.

The team will make what they’re calling a “major football operations announcement” at 12 pm today. According to TSN 1040’s Rick Dhaliwal, they will announce the hiring of Rick Campbell to be their new head coach.

The Lions have been in search of a new coach since they fired DeVone Claybrooks after just one season in charge, following a miserable 5-13 record.

“This has been a challenging season,” said Lions GM Ed Hervey in a media release last month. “We did not meet the expectations we set for ourselves in 2019 and more importantly, we did not meet the expectations of our season ticket holders, fans, and partners.”

Where Claybrooks was a first time CFL head coach, Campbell has no shortage of experience. The son of legendary CFL coach Hugh Campbell, Rick won a Grey Cup in 2016 during a six-year stint as head coach of the Ottawa Redblacks.

Prior to getting his chance with Ottawa, Campbell had served as an assistant coach in the league since 1999.

Campbell and the Redblacks agreed to part ways last month after Ottawa put together a league-worst 3-15 record.
