BC health officials report 998 new coronavirus cases over weekend

BC health officials announced 998 new cases of COVID-19 in the province on Monday afternoon, bringing the provincially recorded total to 18,714.

The new case count reflects numbers from the weekend.

From Saturday to Sunday, 536 new cases were reported. From Sunday to Monday, there were 462 cases.

The update comes after the new regional COVID-19 restrictions regarding gatherings were announced over the weekend.

By specific health region, these case numbers equate to 210 new cases of coronavirus in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 737 in the Fraser Health Region, 12 in the Island Health Region, 28 in the Interior Health region, 11 in the Northern Health Region, and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 4,891 active cases and 9,179 are under active monitoring. Currently, there are 133 people in hospital and 43 in critical care. The remaining individuals are recovering at home in self-isolation.

There have been five new COVID-19-related deaths, for a total of 281 deaths in British Columbia to date.
