"Get your own!" BC and Bellingham residents react to new Trader Joe's

A new Trader Joe’s is coming to Bellingham, and both British Columbians and Bellinghamsters have some thoughts.

Although a development permit was announced earlier this year, Trader Joe’s publicly confirmed the news with Daily Hive yesterday.

There’s been lots of reaction to the news, and it’s mostly excitement.

Residents of Bellingham and BC have an interesting relationship. This relationship is mainly observed from afar and tends to focus primarily on the behaviour of BC residents visiting the Washington town via social media posts.

We’ve covered several instances of this dynamic, including complaints that BC residents act entitled when visiting Bellingham and that many Canadians don’t know how to drive. Despite those tensions, both sides still fondly view each other’s regions.

The new Trader Joe’s, which will open next year, should hopefully alleviate some of those tensions, but the announcement of the new location led to some playful banter online.

This is great news! I’m sorry the folks in Bellingham are annoyed by us, but we spend a lot of $$ there,” one Daily Hive reader said.

Another Daily Hive reader commented on the new store’s proximity to Vancouver.

Two stops closer to Vancouver, actually. Shares the same parking lot as Best Buy. Exit at the Bellingham Airport and head east to Meridian.

One Redditor on the Bellingham subreddit said, “Get your own!! lol.”

Some are more welcoming than others, with one user saying, “I appreciate when people appreciate our beautiful town.”

Many Vancouver readers were celebrating the fact that the new location will have a much bigger parking lot.
