You can watch the year’s most stunning meteor shower at this Lower Mainland park

If you’re an avid stargazer, you’ll want to mark Aug. 9 on your calendar because the Perseids meteor shower will be lighting up the night sky, and a Lower Mainland park is making it easier to view the show.

Folks can head to Aldergrove Regional Park from 8 to 11 p.m. and reserve a spot to watch the meteor shower.

According to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the “comet 109P/Swift–Tuttle causes this remarkable phenomenon. It orbits the sun, leaving a trail of dust and gravel in its path. Every summer, the Earth crosses the comet’s orbital path and passes through its trail of debris.”

“That debris becomes meteors as it disintegrates in our atmosphere and generates impressive flashes of light,” resulting in the Perseids.

The Perseids will be visible this year from July 17 to Aug. 23, and are expected to peak from Aug. 12 to 13, according to NASA. If observed under dark skies with no light pollution, stargazers should be able to spot an average of 25 meteors per hour.

The watch event at Algergrove Regional Park will allow guests to lie back and watch the shooting stars.

The event will also feature backlit skits, a lantern-lit trail, and food from various good trucks.

Registration is required to attend. Be sure to book soon, as slots will fill up quickly. Entry costs $5 per person, and there is a $5 vehicle parking fee.
