An Alberta man who was on his way to Metro Vancouver in a red Mazda hatchback ended up with his vehicle being impounded after an illegal driving move.
According to the BC Highway Patrol (BCHP), the Alberta man is now being forced to make alternate arrangements, “after a series of decisions and alert witnesses that led to his vehicle getting impounded.”
The incident took place on April 28, 2026, just before 6 p.m.
BCHP says that police got a call about a red Mazda that was “driving dangerously” on Highway 1, near Chase, B.C.
At 5:55 p.m., an unmarked BCHP cruiser was overtaken by the red hatchback going westbound on Highway 1, this time in Pritchard, B.C.
“The police officer recorded a speed of 163 km/h in a 100 zone.”
After that, police stopped the Alberta driver before a heavy commercial truck driver approached BCHP. The truck driver told BCHP he had dashcam video of the same driver performing a dangerous pass.
“The truck driver, a 58-year-old Kamloops man, provided a witness statement, his dash-camera video, and offered to appear in traffic court,” BCHP said.
BCHP also shared a clip of the video.
The 59-year-old driver from Red Deer, Alta., was issued several fines for the violations incurred on his trip to Metro Vancouver. Among them, he faces a ticket for excessive speed valued at $483, the cost of a tow truck and seven-day impound, and three years of high-risk driver premiums and escalating insurance, which BCHP says will bring total costs to over $2,500.
He also faces a $109 violation for an illegal pass on a laned roadway and a $109 violation for crossing a double solid line.
“One of the dangerous issues with driving too fast is that your brain can’t process what your eyes should see- such as the police cruiser you’re passing at excessive speed,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol in a release.
“We’re grateful to the professional truck driver who did all the right things to prevent this comedy [from] turning into a tragedy.”
