15 great dogs that need a home for the holidays

Dec 3 2019, 6:45 pm

BC shelters and local rescue groups are packed with amazing animals that are looking for a home for the holidays.

Rescue animals are the best, and by adopting, you can save a life while enriching your own.

Here’s a roundup of some of the great adoptable dogs in the region.

And if you’re thinking of going the rescue group route, it’s important to note that not all groups are created equal. (Here’s a great guide from HugABull on how to source pets from an ethical rescue.)

Tripp

Tripp

Tripp

Intelligent, affectionate and a “bouncing ball of energy”: That’s how shelter staff describe Tripp, a six-month-old Labrador Pointer cross puppy.  Still just a wee guy learning the ropes, he requires some work on his “good boy” manners — but he loves to learn and would thrive with a family that loves the outdoors. Meet Tripp at the Delta Community Animal Shelter.

Bailey

Bailey

Bailey

Not much is known about Bailey, who came into a local shelter as a stray. But the staff has learned she loves to carry along stuffed toys on her walks, and she’s a firm believer that all cats should be chased. And while she’s very quiet inside, she turns into a bouncing bundle of energy outside. Meet Bailey at the Delta Community Animal Shelter.

Alex

Alex / SAINTS

Alex/SAINTS

This handsome lad is Alex! Alex has had a tough life, being pulled from a high-kill shelter in California. He was adopted quickly here but found his new life to be overwhelming, and ended up at SAINTS farm. Alex can be around other dogs but is a bit of a bully and gets easily wound up when they are playing, which is why a home without other animals is best. If you think you could give this boy the stable and loving home he so desperately wants, please contact SAINTS.

Shyla

Shyla/Petfinder.com

Shyla is STILL waiting for her new home, even though Daily Hive profiled her back in April. This girl deserves a happy ending: Shyla spent the first nine years of her life on the end of a chain, in the Northwest Territories. She is currently living at SAINTS, a Mission farm and animal sanctuary that houses old, sick, and unwanted animals. For more information, visit the SAINTS website.

Smith

Smith

Smith

Smith is a two-year-old Chihuahua mix. He is good with other dogs but can get nervous around hyper, bigger dogs. He loves following his people around and will act like your shadow! Meet Smith through CAARE Companion Animal Advocacy & Rescue Effort.

Danny

Danny

Danny

Four-year-old Danny ended up being taken in by HugABull after being overlooked at a local shelter for months. Danny would make an excellent running partner and would love to play fetch for as long as someone was willing. He is also excellent on leash and very food-motivated. HugABull believes Danny would do best with a family that has breed experience, lives in a quiet neighbourhood away from the city, and has older children and no other animals. Learn more about Danny at HugABull.

Ari

Ari

Ari

Ari is a 1.5-year-old bully breed mix that adores men and other dogs and is amazing around children. She’d be ideal in an active home when there is a lot to do because she gets bored easily. She would thrive with people who would take her on a few daily walks or adventures. Learn more about Ari at Smiles & Cries Rescue Society.

Misty

Misty

Misty

Misty is a stunning ball of fun. This young girl just wants to play and run and be close to her humans. She has shown signs of jealousy over her humans, so ideally the perfect home for Misty would be active family who can socialize her correctly and with patience. She really is a good girl who knows basic commands and is eager to please. She is very loving and super sweet. Learn more about Misty at Smiles & Cries Rescue Society.

Asher and Rollie

Asher and Rollie

Asher and Rollie

Rollie and Asher are best pals and can never be separated. Both dogs were dumped in an abandoned gravel pit in Abbotsford about three years ago. Asher is an Australian terrier mix and is about five years old. Rollie is a Chihuahua Pug mix and he is about seven years old. They have been good with small and large dogs (and have left the cats alone). Meet Asher and Rollie at Dhana Metta Rescue Agency.

Leroy Brown

Leroy Brown

Leroy Brown

Bad bad Leroy Brown, the cutest dog in the whole dang town. Leroy has been in the care of Dhana Metta Rescue Society for four (!!!) years. They say, “He’s awesome but people understand his needs.” But if you get on this little guy’s wavelength, he’ll be your best buddy. Learn more about Leroy Brown at Dhana Metta Rescue Society.

Sandy

Sandy

Sandy

Sandy looks sweet, but make no mistake, she can be a devil in disguise. She has been returned twice because people didn’t believe the rescue agency about her preferring to be in a separate room when guests come over. But she’s super loving and will “love you unconditionally if you work around her needs.” Learn more about Sandy at Dhana Metta Rescue Society.

Peaches

Peaches

Peaches

Fully housetrained, Peaches loves all dogs. She enjoys walks, doesn’t pull on her leash, likes car rides, and is just a loving girl who thinks she is a lap dog. She is a ladies’ dog, truly. She does not like tall men or men in uniform. She is much more confident as a dog altogether when she is with a pack. So ideally the perfect home for Peaches would be a female-only home with another dog. Learn more about Peaches at Smiles & Cries Rescue Society.

Oreo

Oreo

Oreo

Oreo is a lover of humans and has been great with other dogs. This curious two-year-old loves the outdoors and is a playful teddy bear. He is calm inside and sleeps through the night with no barking or accidents, and he is good in his crate. Meet this love bug through CAARE Companion Animal Advocacy & Rescue Effort.

Stanford

Stanford

Stanford

Stanford is a boisterous eight-year-old Shih Tzu. He absolutely loves people and will definitely be a good cuddle buddy. He has hung out with dogs before and has done well. Meet Stanford through CAARE Companion Animal Advocacy & Rescue Effort.
