20-year-old seriously hurt after being hit by unmarked police car in Squamish

A 20-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries, after he was hit by the driver of an unmarked police vehicle in Squamish on Tuesday night.

According to RCMP, the incident took place around 10:3o pm, when an officer who was on patrol – but not responding to a specific call at the time – was involved in a collision with the pedestrian, at the at the intersection of Highway 99 and Garibaldi Way.

Police said the officer notified dispatch of the incident and began to provide medical assistance. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene and the man was immediately taken to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

No one else was injured in the incident.

The highway was closed for a few hours as a result of the incident, but has since reopened.

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) has been contacted and is investigating the motor vehicle incident. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information is being released by the RCMP at this time.
