"VanVleet and Eat": Toronto restaurant wants Fred to re-sign with Raptors

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

“Ka’wine and dine” was a failure, but that’s not stopping one Toronto restaurant from using a similar tactic in an effort to get Fred VanVleet to re-sign with the Raptors this offseason.

Pai Northern Thai Kitchen is offering VanVleet a delicious incentive to remain with the Raptors, offering the pending free agent free meals at their restaurant. They’re calling it “VanVleet and Eat,” vowing that “Freddy eats here for free” on a sticker located on the front door of the restaurant.

Is it a cheesy attempt at publicity? Probably. Does VanVleet need free meals given he made $9 million last season? Clearly not.

But the gesture shows how loved VanVleet is in Toronto. The 26-year-old guard had a breakout season in 2019-20, establishing himself as a starter and helping the Raptors secure the second-best record in the NBA regular season.

VanVleet is due a big raise this offseason and there is uncertainty at whether the Raptors will be able to keep him. Certainly, the team would love to re-sign him given VanVleet is coming off career highs in points (17.6), assists (6.6), rebounds (3.8), steals (1.9), and minutes (35.7) per game. The Raptors’ leading playoff scorer this summer, VanVleet posted even better numbers across the board in the postseason.

So yeah, it’s time to pull out all the stops.
