Toronto City Councillor suggests cameras on TTC streetcars to tag vehicles passing open doors
Stepping off a streetcar can be perilous in Toronto where the tracks often force passengers to cross a lane of traffic before making it to the safety of the sidewalk.
Toronto City Councillor Mike Layton tweeted out a suggestion that might make commuting safer.
Can @TTChelps install cameras on streetcars to tag vehicles going past open doors? @bradTTC @JoshColle Horn blast doesn’t seem to deter.

While it wasn’t a formal proposal (meaning there’s no budget or plan in place to implement such suggestion), the tweet has gained a lot of attention. Even TTC spokesman Brad Ross agreed it’s a good idea.
@m_layton @TTChelps @JoshColle It is being looked at, yes.

Meanwhile, Toronto Twitter users hopped on board with the idea and even had some suggestions of their own.
@m_layton thank you for proposing this idea. Just a few weeks ago I almost got hit by a BMW SUV on Queen St. W and John St. He didn’t stop

@m_layton @TTChelps @bradTTC @JoshColle I’ve always thought sharp daggers coming out of the side of the streetcar might be effective.

@m_layton @TTChelps @bradTTC @JoshColle How about adding pool noodles to the doors, like this cyclist does? 😜https://t.co/CzlPjmDS4N

@m_layton @TTChelps @bradTTC @JoshColle School buses have had flashing lights and big stop signs for decades. Start there as a minimum, #TTC
