Two people are in hospital after suffering gunshot wounds on Saturday night, Toronto Police Service reports.

According to TPS’ official Twitter account, officers responded to report of the sound of gunfire at 8:23 on December 22, in the area of Thorncliffe Park Drive and Overlea Boulevard.

Reports say that several people were seen fleeing the area.

Once on scene, police located two people suffering from gunshots. Initial reports said that one victim was suffering from life-threatening injuries, though an update indicated that both were in serious but not life-threatening condition.

Law enforcement has not released any other information at this time.

Information collected on the Toronto Police Public Safety Data Portal, last updated on December 16, shows that the week before this incident, the city had a total of 464 reported shooting incidents in 2019, with a victim total of 717.

This is significantly higher than 2018’s total, which saw a 428 shooting incidents, with a total of 613 victims.

In a recent end-of-year press conference, Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders stressed the need to build stronger relationships within the city’s communities to combat gun and gang violence.

“We have to develop stronger community relationships with all segments of our community if we’re going to get it right,” he said. “We know and we’ve seen results whenever we work in partnership with the communities we have more sustainable solutions. The enforcement piece plays an important part.

“I’m not here to say softer policing, I’m here to say smarter policing.”
