Severe thunderstorm 'Watch' upgraded to 'Warning' by Environment Canada

Jul 20 2019, 12:20 am

Environment Canada has just upgraded its severe thunderstorm watch to a warning for this afternoon and evening.

This is in addition to the heat warning that’s already in effect for the City of Toronto.

According to the weather agency, conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain.

After an initial round of scattered thunderstorms this morning, additional thunderstorms are forecast to develop this afternoon into this evening.

Environment Canada is now advising anyone in or near this area should be on the lookout for adverse weather conditions and take necessary safety precautions.

“Please refer to the latest public forecasts for further details and continue to monitor the situation through your local radio and television stations or Weatheradio,” reads the weather statement.

Thankfully, a cooler and less humid air mass is forecast to arrive in the wake of a weak cold front Sunday, according to the weather agency.

Temperatures are currently showing in the mid-20s next week, which is much cooler than what it’s been this week. Hold on, Toronto — relief is coming.
