We already know that Toronto’s got some top-notch shopping districts, a solid quality of life and a highly-ranked international airport, and now the city has another title to add to its sash.

For the second year in a row, Newsweek named Toronto General Hospital one of the best in the world.

In fact, the hospital climbed up three spots from last year, and is number four on this year’s list of the top 10 hospitals in the world

It is also the only Canadian hospital in the top 10.

According to the Hospital, “TGH is cited for its world-leading Sprott Department of Surgery, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and Soham & Shaila Ajmera Family Transplant Centre. TGH’s excellence in the fields of endocrinology, autoimmunology and diabetes, its work to provide access to high-quality care to patients in remote communities, and a strong strategic plan were also contributing factors.”

The ranking is managed by a global market research company in partnership with Newsweek magazine and rated more than 1,000 healthcare institutions.

The 2020 top 10 list was finalized by a panel of doctors, medical professionals and administrators from across four continents, according to a release.

TGH is part of University Health Network (UHN), Canada’s largest research and teaching hospital, affiliated with the University of Toronto.

“UHN is proud to be recognized for its service to patients and track record of innovation among this elite group of hospitals,” says Dr. Kevin Smith, UHN President & CEO.

“This recognition is a testament to our staff, physicians, researchers, Board and volunteers – past and present. Our privilege of serving as a world-leading academic health sciences centre would not be possible without the support of our Foundation and donors who believe in our ability to help deliver a healthier world.”

The world’s top 10 hospitals in 2020:

  1. Mayo Clinic, USA
  2. Cleveland Clinic, USA
  3. Massachusetts General Hospital, USA
