The Toronto Blue Jays will be without Jose Berrios moving forward as they look to hold off the New York Yankees for the AL East Division lead.
The Blue Jays, who demoted Berrios from the starting rotation to the bullpen last week, announced today that the two-time All Star has been placed on the 15-day AL with right elbow inflammation. He is set to receive an MRI to determine just how much time he will miss.
Manager John Schneider didn’t provide much context on when the injury occurred, but did tell reporters that it’s something the 31-year-old has been “dealing with for awhile.”

Berrios came out of the bullpen for the first time this season and just the second of his career on Wednesday night in a game in which the Jays were trailing 4-0 to the Boston Red Sox. He struggled through two innings, giving up three earned runs in the brief appearance.
With Berrios out, the Blue Jays have recalled Paxton Schultz from Triple-A Buffalo. The 27-year-old has pitched 24.2 innings with the Jays this season, putting up a 4.38 ERA along with 28 strikeouts and eight bases on balls.
While the results of the MRI will tell the tale, this could be the end of the season for Berrios, who has a rather disappointing 4.17 ERA through 166 innings. The two seasons prior saw him put up ERAs of 3.65 and 3.60.
This injury continues to what has been a banged-up Blue Jays group as of late. They remain without Bo Bichette, who has been on the IL since early September due to a PCL sprain in his left knee. They are also without Chris Bassitt, who was placed on the IL this past weekend due to lower back inflammation.
They aren’t the only players to have been placed on the IL recently, either, as Ty France also received an injury designation earlier this week due to a left oblique injury.
