Toronto is about to lose one of its greatest vegan bakeries

Vegan hearts are breaking in the west end this week, as devastating news keeps pouring in.

First, upscale Bloor West restaurant Awai announced it’ll be closing its doors soon. And now, Through Being Cool, known for fast-casual vegan eats and mouthwatering savoury bites, is following suit.

A post shared to Instagram says that while it’s been “an extremely difficult decision,” the bakery will be closing up shop on June 30.

“Toronto’s vegan scene has grown massively over the years, and we encourage you to support local and independent business whenever possible!” the post’s caption reads.

It also notes that the shop’s merchandise, such as tees and canvas bags, have been marked down by 50% in advance of the end of the month. If you’d like a memento from this spot to hold onto forevermore, now is the time to take the plunge.

“Stay tuned because this surely isn’t the last you will be seeing of TBC,” the post continues.

Which offers a shred of hope that perhaps, this eatery, with its extravagant donuts and one-of-a-kind sammies, could pop up someway, somehow, somewhere in the future.

Only time will tell.

On May 15th, 2013 a lease was signed and renovations started here at 1277 Bloor St. W. It has been an extremely difficult decision, but on Sunday June 30th we will be serving up treats, sandwiches and so much more for the last time in these walls. It has been an incredible run, and I am so grateful to all who have come in and shown us love and support over the years. When deciding to open up shop I never could have imagined what TBC has turned into today.
