The Toronto Sceptres of the PWHL are hoping to feed off some of the magic that the Blue Jays had this past season.
The Sceptres got their season off to a good start, defeating the two-time defending champion Minnesota Frost in their opener. It was a tight 2-1 victory with goals from Ella Shelton and Kiara Zanon. It’s the start of what Toronto hopes is a championship season, after coming up short in the semifinals in each of the last two PWHL seasons.
To help rally the team, Sceptres captain Blayre Turnbull revealed the ‘Pretty Woman Jacket’, which is modelled after the Blue Jays’ home run jacket and is given to the most outstanding player after a win.
Toronto goaltender Raygan Kirk was the first player to be awarded the jacket this season.
“A lot of us were pretty inspired with [the Blue Jays’] run in playoffs and through the World Series,” Turnbull said. “The special thing about the Blue Jays was that on any given night, different players stepped up and throughout he games, every player had an impact.
“From our short time together so far, I think that’s the type of team that we’re gonna set out to be.”

In a funny moment, Turnball revealed that injured defenceman Renata Fast was the one who actually made the jacket. An opportunity she had because she wasn’t playing due to her injury.
The Sceptres’ captain cracked a few jokes while Fast made sure to let everyone know the jacket was still a work in progress.
“Renata was hard at work this afternoon, thank god she was scratched,” Turnball said to laughs throughout the locker room.
Toronto kept the design simple with the jacket, with every player’s hometown being featured on the back surrounding the Sceptres logo, with stars going down one of the sleeves.
There was also an MVP patch on the front, which featured a raccoon with a crown. That might be a nod to a certain raccoon at the Toronto Zoo wishing the team luck before their season opener.
No matter the inspiration, Sceptres fans will be hoping to see a lot of this jacket throughout the season, as Toronto tries to become the first Canadian team to win the Walter Cup.
