The world's largest naturally frozen skating rink has closed again

Entering its 50th year, the world’s largest naturally frozen skating rink was open for less than a week before closing again.

Spanning through 7.8 kilometres of Ottawa, the Rideau Canal Skateway has closed due to “current weather conditions.”

While usually opening in December, this year was a late start as conditions were only favourable for skaters as of January 22. As of Tuesday, all 13 sections of the rink have closed again.

Maintenance crews are continuing “necessary operations” to reopen the Skateway but no timetable has been announced besides attempting to open the canal “as quickly as possible, as weather permits.”

The public is asked not to venture onto the Skateway during the closure. “Please respect the barricades and the signs installed at access points,” states the Rideau Canal Skateway website.

Information about the reopening will be posted as it becomes available.
