While many Canadians are avoiding going south of the border by whatever means necessary and choosing to stay local, some parts of the U.S. are trying to incentivize Canadians to travel across the border with a discount — and an apology.
This all started because of a new campaign called Open Arms for Canada, which was put together by numerous Seattle businesspeople, like Donegan and Howard Wright, who are the head of Seattle Hospitality Group (SHG).
“We love our Canadian neighbours. And we regret how our federal government is treating you. We wish we could change what happens in the other Washington,” said Open Arms.

So, to incentivize Canadian tourists to visit Seattle, from May 9 to 10 (which coincides with the Blue Jays’ away game in Seattle), many businesses and restaurants are offering 30 per cent discounts.
“We’re taking the Canadian dollar at par — marking 30 per cent off your tab to account for the exchange rate. It’s our way of saying, ‘We’re glad you’re here, and we’re on your side,'” added Open Arms.
Participating restaurants include Bombo Italian Kitchen, The Victor Tavern, Pike Brewing, and many more.

Additionally, tourist destinations like the Space Needle are offering discounts, alongside hotels and ferries. A full list of participating businesses can be found on the Open Arms for Canada website.
To redeem the discount, simply show valid Canadian identification, such as a passport or driver’s license. Participation between businesses may vary, so it’s best to check each spot before visiting.
