After media reports broke on Friday that Toronto Maple Leafs player Auston Matthews has tested positive for COVID-19, the NHL has now released a statement regarding the opening of its training facilities and its testing policies around COVID-19.
Clubs were permitted to open their training facilities as of June 8, and “all players entering these facilities…have been subject to mandatory testing for COVID-19.”
It noted that as of Friday, “in excess of 200 players” have undergone multiple testing, and a total of 11 of those players have tested positive for the virus.

“All players who have tested positive have been self-isolated and are following CDC and Health Canada protocols,” the statement said.
The NHL said it will “provide a weekly update” on the number of tests administered to players, as well as the results of those tests.
For now, though, the league said it “will not be providing information in the identity of the players or their clubs.”
