The season's barely started but Toronto Maple Leafs are already fielding trade calls

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: the Toronto Maple Leafs might be trading Nick Robertson.

A former top prospect of the Leafs, Robertson has found himself in trade rumours for the past few seasons, even going as far as putting in an official trade request prior to last season.

And while he never got his wish then, Toronto appears to be in the process of attracting suitors for the American forward.

“The 24-year-old finds himself one more time in a very familiar spot with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he’s hoping for a larger role, opportunity in the National Hockey League,” NHL insider Darren Dreger said Tuesday on TSN’s Insider Trading segment. “He’s pushing 160 NHL games. I know that Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has recently talked with clubs that may have some interest in Nick Robertson. Given the depth that the Maple Leafs have, it’s a tough spot for Robertson. So maybe it’s time to give him a fresh start somewhere else.”

Dreger’s report follows news from the offseason that the Leafs were taking calls on Robertson.

In late September, Elite Prospects’ Cam Robinson named San Jose as one of the teams that had inquired about the Leafs forward.

How has Robertson played for the Maple Leafs?

Robertson has one assist in four games for the Leafs thus far.

A second-round pick by the Leafs in 2019, he’s struggled to find his footing as a regular member of the lineup, including being scratched for all but three playoff games this past spring.

In 2024-25, he put up career numbers of 15 goals and seven assists, but averaged just 12:00 minutes a night of ice time, the second-lowest total of forwards who suited up for at least half the team’s games.
