The suspect fled the scene. At this time there are no known reports of injuries.
Toronto Mayor John Tory said he is “shocked and appalled” to learn about the assault.
“I am shocked and appalled to learn a student wearing a hijab was assaulted on the way to school this morning in Scarborough,” said Tory in a statement. “No child should ever be afraid walking to school in Toronto because of what they are wearing or for any other reason.”
Tory asked that anyone with information to contact Toronto police or Crime Stoppers.
“I join with all Toronto residents in standing up to such an act of hatred,” he said. “Intolerance and hate of any kind, including islamophobia, has no place in our city, our province, or our country.”
