Coming soon to Toronto: Mahjong Bar, a bar hidden inside a bodega

Sep 12 2017, 1:42 am

Look for the little pink bodega. You’ll have to pass through this unassuming retail front to find Toronto’s newest hidden watering hole.

Mahjong Bar, a new cocktail bar and spot for Chinese bar snacks is opening soon on Dundas West and is intended to operate daily for drinks from 5 pm to 2 am, while kitche will be open until last call Wednesday through Sundays.

It’s a new project from a team including Emily Blake, Kyle Wong, Joshua LeBlanc (ex-Track and Field), and GM Andrew Perry (ex-Home of The Brave).

In the lead up to the opening, the team is tight-lipped on what’s happening behind the bodega but Blake shares with Daily Hive that we can expect a well-rounded bar offering “a diverse and interesting list of wine, beer and cider as well as a sophisticated but approachable cocktail list,” in addition to a menu created in collaboration with the team at Soos.

At a recent pop-up at Cold Tea in Kensington Market, Mahjong previewed menu items including sticky soy pork ribs with smashed cucumber salad, chicken char siu mantou, and Sichuan cold noodles.

Meanwhile, over at Soos, they’ve been testing out dishes like Szechuan fried chicken, chengdu chili wontons, and braised beef noodles, along with soju-salted watermelon.
