The self-identified “large and in charge, chunky yet funky” drag queen works to spread love and to celebrate all identities.

“We are loving individuals and we are artists, we are doctors, we are lawyers, we are mothers, we are fathers. We’re every bit of human as the rest of this world,” says Royale. “So, why not have the same heights and the same lifestyle that everyone else is afforded?”

With Vancouver Pride coming up soon, Royale talked with us about the historical role of drag queens fighting for equal rights and how we should never put a specification on who you can love.

It has now been 50 years since the Stonewall riots, but Royale emphasizes that there is much more progress to be made. “We’ve come a long way, but we have a long way to go.”
