A petition to honour Kobe Bryant in the form of a redesigned NBA logo has gained incredible support since the basketball legend’s tragic death two days ago.

“With the untimely and unexpected passing of the great Kobe Bryant please sign this petition in an attempt to immortalize him forever as the new NBA logo,” the petition reads.

The Change.org petition organizer, “Nick M” of Vancouver, BC, says his original goal was to get a hundred signatures. Instead, as of Tuesday afternoon, the petition had collected over 2.2 million signatures.

The idea is to change the NBA’s logo, which currently features a silhouette of Jerry West, a Hall of Fame player and a longtime LA Lakers executive. Ironically, it was West who was responsible for bringing Kobe to Los Angeles in the first place, as he was the Lakers general manager in 1996.

The new logo would be a silhouette of the image below, first created in 2017 by graphic designer Tyson Beck.

“Over two million people have signed the petition to have the NBA logo updated to reflect Kobe Bryant. To me it would be a fitting and rightfully deserved tribute to make the change,” the logo original concept’s designer said in an Instagram post.

“Kobe is everything that represents what basketball truly stands for, he is the modern day global ambassador of the game.”
