Famous L.A.-based Japanese restaurant to open first Canadian location in Toronto

A L.A.-based Japanese restaurant chain with several locations in California (and one in the Bahamas) is set to open a new Toronto location.
… Just don’t expect it any time soon.
Sigh. Waiting around is becoming as ubiquitous to the Toronto experience as eating a beef patty on the subway or bearing witness to something that makes you wish your eyes had an “unsee” feature at the Queen and Spadina McDonald’s.
Whether we’re waiting in line at the hottest new sandwich shop or simply waiting for a new subway line to be completed (we’re looking at you, Eglinton LRT), Toronto’s sat.
ThereĀ isĀ something to be said for the wait, making the end product feel all the more rewarding when it finally arrives, though.
Toronto can officially add the first-ever Canadian location of L.A.-based Japanese chain Katsuya by sbe to its list of restaurants to look forward to. You just have to be ok with the small caveat that it’s not expected to open until 2028.
Taking over the second floor of the proposed new Freed Hotel and Residences at 220-240 Adelaide West, the restaurant marks (or, will mark, when it finally opens) the first Canadian location for the chain, and the second outside of the United States.
The menu, crafted by Master sushi chef Katsuya Uechi, is decidedly sushi-forward, akin to other luxury Japanese restaurants like Nobu.
Sumptuous staples likeĀ Wagyu Gyoza,Ā Spicy Tuna Crispy RiceĀ andĀ Miso Cod Bites join a comprehensive suite of sushi, sashimi, and cooked fish and meat dishes for a menu that’s become a California classic with five locations and an additional four on the way.
According to Katsuya’s website, the menu at the new Toronto location will even include some items exclusive to the city, but we’ll just have to wait three years to find out what they are.
According to Katsuya’s website, the restaurant will command a whopping 10,000 square feet, joining the building’s 100 five-star hotel rooms and 400 luxury condos. Now that we mention it, this is reminding us more and more of Nobu by the minute…

Luckily, that means that, while we sit on our hands waiting for Katsuya to make its Canadian debut in 2028 (maybe we’ll have flying cars by then!), you can get a taste of a similarly California-influenced take on Japanese cuisine at Nobu.
Unless, of course, you want to take a trip down to California.
