Alleged impaired driver charged following deadly hit-and-run in Regent Park

A 40-year-old man is facing multiple charges, including impaired driving causing death, in connection with a deadly hit-and-run in Regent Park Thursday afternoon.

On Thursday, June 20, around 1:15 pm, police responded to a call for a personal injury collision at Dundas Street East and Regent Park Boulevard.

Police say a 39-year-old woman was standing on the southeast corner of the intersection when a 40-year-old man was driving a Mazda CX9 eastbound on Dundas Street East and approaching Regent Park Boulevard.

At this time, the driver of the Mazda lost control of his vehicle, mounting the southeast curb. The vehicle then struck a fire hydrant before striking the pedestrian.

According to police, the pedestrian sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the Mazda reportedly tried to flee on foot but was subsequently arrested by police a short distance away.

On Friday, Joshua Smoke, 40, of Toronto, was charged with impaired operation of a conveyance causing death, dangerous operating of a conveyance causing death, and leaving accident scene causing death.

Police are asking local residents, business, and drivers, who may have security or dash camera footage of the area or incident, to contact investigators.
